Working with the adolescents has been challenging and interesting. We started by collectivising adolescent girls in each village and at present we are working approximately 800 adolescent girls. We believe that girls are an important pillar of a family and it is in the adolescent age that they are inquisitive and can shape their attitude and personality. So we focus on personality development of girls and their life skill building. The approach is to work with the adolescent girls of those families with whom we have been working, so that there is a strong & positive change in those families. The girls need to be educated too so that their analytical ability develops and they become vibrant & articulate, challenging social milieu.
The program started in November 2013 and it main focus is to enhance the analytical ability of the girls and develop in them a deeper understanding of themselves as well as issues related to their sexuality and adolescent health. Use of various games/sports and activities are organized for the girls in which they participate, thereby making them more mobile and confident, aware of their physical changes and body This program is intensive and it is challenging when girls start questioning taboos and restrictions imposed on women and girls, just by the virtue of them being girls.! The program has helped to strengthen the field base, understand issues related to adolescent health, instill feminist leadership in them and make their voices heard. The girls are taking leadership, questioning the ANM in the village, various taboos at home, engaging with the panchayat so that they get a play ground and so that they are secure in the village. Meetings with the girls, with their parents, health service providers, exposure visits, residential camps on leadership, training in football as a sport etc, are a few activities that have been initiated with them.
